Psalms 74:8 meaning and explanation

They said in their hearts, “We will crush them completely.” They burned down every place where God met us in the land.

Psalms 74:8, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

The speaker is Asaph, or a later singer in that guild, lamenting the destruction of the temple, most likely Babylon's burning of Jerusalem in 586 BC. The enemies said in their hearts that they would crush Israel completely, and they acted on it: every place where God met his people in the land was burned.
