Psalms 81:13 meaning and explanation

If only My people would listen to Me, if Israel would follow My ways,

Psalms 81:13, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Psalm 81 is a festival song of Asaph, and from verse 6 God himself speaks, recalling how he freed Israel from Egypt and tested them at Meribah. Verse 13 voices his longing rather than a command: "If only My people would listen to Me." The Hebrew verb shama means both to hear and to obey, so listening here is a way of life, not mere attention.
