Explanation preview
An angel is showing John a vision of "the great prostitute," a symbol for Babylon the Great, the proud city and world system opposed to God. Her immorality is first of all spiritual: the kings of the earth give her their loyalty and share her wealth and power, and the peoples of the earth are intoxicated by what she offers, so that they cannot see clearly.
