An angel who had poured out one of the seven bowls now invites John to witness the judgment of the great prostitute. In Revelation, Babylon stands for a seductive city and empire that draws the nations into idolatry and wealth, and the image of a prostitute echoes Old Testament prophets who called unfaithful Jerusalem and Tyre harlots.
