Romans 4:17 meaning and explanation

As it is written: “I have made you a father of many nations.” He is our father in the presence of God, in whom he believed, the God who gives life to the dead and calls into being what does not yet exist.

Romans 4:17, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Paul is arguing that Abraham's standing with God rested on faith, not circumcision or law. Quoting Genesis 17:5, he notes that God made Abraham a father of many nations, and Paul applies this to everyone who shares Abraham's faith.
