Paul is answering reports of quarrels in the Corinthian church, where members were claiming loyalty to different leaders, some saying “I follow Paul” and others “I follow Apollos” (verses 11 to 12). In that setting he thanks God that he personally baptized only Crispus and Gaius, so no one could claim he had built a following in his own name.
