not in lustful passion like the Gentiles who do not know God;

1 Thessalonians 4:5, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Paul writes to new believers in Thessalonica, a city where pagan worship and sexual permissiveness were part of ordinary life. In verses 3 to 8 he sets out God's will for holiness, and verse 5 contrasts the self control of verse 4 with the lustful passion, in Greek epithymia, or strong desire, that marked those who did not know God.
