Daniel 8:24 meaning and explanation

His power will be great, but it will not be his own. He will cause terrible destruction and succeed in whatever he does. He will destroy the mighty men along with the holy people.

Daniel 8:24, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Gabriel is explaining Daniel's vision of the ram and the goat, and the insolent king of verse 23 is understood by most interpreters as Antiochus IV Epiphanes, the Seleucid ruler who persecuted Jews in the second century BC. His power is great but not his own, meaning it is granted rather than inherent, and his success is real though temporary.
