Deuteronomy 16:5 meaning and explanation

You are not to sacrifice the Passover animal in any of the towns that the LORD your God is giving you.

Deuteronomy 16:5, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Moses is speaking to the Israelites on the plains of Moab, just before they enter the land, and he is reshaping how Passover will be kept once they are settled. In Egypt each household sacrificed a lamb at its own door; now the sacrifice must be brought to the single place the LORD will choose as a dwelling for His Name.
