Mordecai, a Jewish exile living at the citadel of Susa, had adopted his orphaned cousin Esther, and she had just become queen while keeping her Jewish identity hidden at his instruction. Sitting at the king's gate, he learned that two eunuchs who guarded the entrance, Bigthan and Teresh, had conspired to kill King Xerxes.
