Moses has just seen Israel defeat Amalek while Joshua fought in the valley and Aaron and Hur held up his weary hands. Now he builds an altar and names it Yahweh Nissi, "The LORD Is My Banner." In the ancient world a banner was a rallying flag raised over an army, the sign people gathered under in battle.
