Exodus 17:16 meaning and explanation

“Indeed,” he said, “a hand was lifted up toward the throne of the LORD. The LORD will war against Amalek from generation to generation.”

Exodus 17:16, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Moses speaks this line after Israel’s first battle, against the Amalekites at Rephidim. The Hebrew of the opening clause is famously difficult, and translations differ: some read it as a hand raised against the LORD’s throne, others as a hand raised to the LORD’s banner, linking it to the altar name in verse 15.
