Exodus 33:11 meaning and explanation

Thus the LORD would speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. Then Moses would return to the camp, but his young assistant Joshua son of Nun would not leave the tent.

Exodus 33:11, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

After Israel's golden calf sin, God withdrew His presence from the camp, and Moses pitched the Tent of Meeting outside it. There the LORD descended in the pillar of cloud and spoke with Moses "face to face, as a man speaks to his friend," an idiom for direct, unhurried conversation rather than a literal sight of God's face, which verse 20 denies.
