Exodus 33:5 meaning and explanation

For the LORD had said to Moses, “Tell the Israelites, ‘You are a stiff-necked people. If I should go with you for a single moment, I would destroy you. Now take off your jewelry, and I will decide what to do with you.’”

Exodus 33:5, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

After the golden calf, God tells Moses to relay a hard word to Israel: they are a stiff-necked people, an image drawn from an ox that refuses the yoke. God says that if he went up with them even for a moment, his holy anger could destroy them.
