I will disperse you among the nations and scatter you throughout the lands; I will purge your uncleanness.

God speaks through Ezekiel to Jerusalem, the "city of bloodshed" whose leaders, priests, prophets and people have all turned to violence, idolatry and injustice. Exile is the sentence, but the verse names a purpose within it: the scattering will purge uncleanness.
