Abram has obeyed God's call to leave Haran and has entered Canaan, but he does not yet possess any of it. He travels through the land until he reaches Shechem, a town in the central hill country, and stops at the Oak of Moreh, a landmark likely tied to a Canaanite shrine or a place of divination.
