Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, “You have brought trouble upon me by making me a stench to the Canaanites and Perizzites, the people of this land. We are few in number; if they unite against me and attack me, I and my household will be destroyed.”

Jacob has just learned that his sons Simeon and Levi slaughtered the men of Shechem after the city's males were circumcised, and that the other brothers plundered the town. Speaking to the two ringleaders, Jacob thinks first of survival: his family is small and surrounded by Canaanite peoples who may now unite against him.
