Isaiah 34:10 meaning and explanation

It will not be quenched—day or night. Its smoke will ascend forever. From generation to generation it will lie desolate; no one will ever again pass through it.

Isaiah 34:10, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Isaiah 34 is the LORD's prophetic word through the prophet, moving from judgment on the nations to Edom, Israel's ancient enemy, named in verses 5 and 6 and pictured in verse 9. The fire and smoke here mean total, lasting ruin: the picture is of a land left permanently desolate, its smoke a lasting sign of the verdict, the way the prophets often use "forever." Some readers take this as a portrait of final judgment, others as a historical oracle already fulfilled.
