For death has climbed in through our windows; it has entered our fortresses to cut off the children from the streets, the young men from the town squares.

Jeremiah is speaking in a lament over Jerusalem, and in verse 21 he pictures death as an intruder that cannot be kept out. In the ancient world, windows were open openings in the wall, and a fortress was the strongest defense a town had.
