Now there was a garden in the place where Jesus was crucified, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid.

John has just described Jesus' death, and Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus have asked Pilate for the body. This verse sets the scene for the burial: near Golgotha, where crucifixions took place, there was a garden with a tomb cut from rock that had never been used.
