John has just described Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus wrapping Jesus' body with spices and linen, following Jewish burial custom. The day of Preparation was the Friday before the Sabbath, and this particular Sabbath was a High Sabbath during Passover week, so the body had to be buried before sunset.
