The scribes and Pharisees are speaking to Jesus in the temple courts, quoting the Law of Moses, which prescribed stoning for adultery (Leviticus 20:10; Deuteronomy 22:22). Their question is a trap, as verse 6 makes clear: they want grounds to accuse Him, whether of contradicting Moses or of defying Roman authority.
