Judges 9:46 meaning and explanation

On hearing of this, all the leaders in the tower of Shechem entered the inner chamber of the temple of El-berith.

Judges 9:46, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

After Abimelech sacks Shechem, the surviving leaders flee to the tower of Shechem and take refuge in the inner chamber of the temple of El-berith, a name meaning "God of the covenant." The scene is bitterly ironic: the same temple treasury that once funded Abimelech's hired killers now shelters his terrified allies. Their flight to a sanctuary shows that even a sacred place offers no safety when God has turned against a man's cause.
