Lamentations 2:21 meaning and explanation

Both young and old lie together in the dust of the streets. My young men and maidens have fallen by the sword. You have slain them in the day of Your anger; You have slaughtered them without compassion.

Lamentations 2:21, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

The speaker is the poet of Lamentations, voicing Jerusalem's grief after Babylon destroyed the city and its temple in 586 BC. In the verses before, he has described the Lord acting like an enemy, and here he names the cost: young and old lie together in the dust of the streets, and the young men and maidens, the city's future, have fallen by the sword.
