Luke 7:32 meaning and explanation

They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling out to one another: ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not weep.’

Luke 7:32, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Jesus is speaking to the crowds about the people of his generation, and he borrows a picture from children's games in the marketplace. Children playing wedding music expect dancing, then switch to a funeral dirge and expect mourning, but their playmates refuse to join either.
