Jesus is telling a parable to the chief priests, scribes and elders in the temple courts, and verse 2 continues the story of the vineyard owner who rented his land to tenants. At harvest the owner sends a servant to collect his share of the fruit, which was the normal arrangement between an absent landowner and those who worked his land.
