Mark has just brought Jesus to Golgotha, the Place of the Skull, after the soldiers' mockery and Simon of Cyrene carrying the cross. Roman executioners sometimes gave condemned prisoners a drugged drink, and here it is wine mixed with myrrh, a painkiller meant to dull the agony.
