Matthew 21:10 meaning and explanation

When Jesus had entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, “Who is this?”

Matthew 21:10, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Jesus enters Jerusalem at the climax of his ministry, having just been acclaimed by the crowds with branches and shouts of Hosanna. Matthew alone notes that the whole city was stirred, using a Greek verb (seio) that suggests an earthquake like shaking, the same word used for the quake at the crucifixion.
