Matthew 21:9 meaning and explanation

The crowds that went ahead of Him and those that followed were shouting: “Hosanna to the Son of David!” “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Hosanna in the highest!”

Matthew 21:9, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

The crowds surrounding Jesus on the road to Jerusalem shout words drawn from Psalm 118, a psalm sung at Passover. "Hosanna" comes from a Hebrew plea meaning "save now," but by this time it had become a shout of praise and hope.
