Numbers 20:17 meaning and explanation
Please let us pass through your land. We will not cut through any field or vineyard, or drink water from any well. We will stay on the King’s Highway; we will not turn to the right or to the left until we have passed through your territory.”
Numbers 20:17, Berean Standard Bible
Explanation preview
Moses sends messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom, whose people descend from Esau, Jacob's brother, so he addresses him as "your brother Israel." Israel has just come out of Egypt and needs a route through Edomite territory. The request is careful and peaceable: no fields or vineyards will be crossed, no well water taken, and the people will stay on the King's Highway, the main north-south trade road, without turning aside.
