John has just greeted the seven churches of Asia and praised Jesus as the faithful witness who freed us from sin by His blood. Here he announces Christ's return, drawing on Daniel 7:13, where one like a son of man comes with the clouds of heaven, and on Zechariah 12:10, where people look on the one they pierced and mourn.
