John has just described the soldier piercing Jesus' side with a spear, and he presents this as the fulfillment of Scripture. The quotation comes from Zechariah 12:10, where God promises to pour out a spirit of grace and supplication on Jerusalem, and its people will look on one they have pierced and mourn for him.
