Isaiah 66:16 meaning and explanation

For by fire and by His sword, the LORD will execute judgment on all flesh, and many will be slain by the LORD.

Isaiah 66:16, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Isaiah 66 closes a long prophetic book, and here the LORD himself speaks through the prophet to a people divided between the arrogant and the humble. Fire and sword are images of divine judgment, the means by which God settles accounts with "all flesh," meaning every kind of person and nation, not Israel alone.
