In the same way, any one of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be My disciple.

Jesus is speaking to the large crowds traveling with Him, and He has just told two parables about counting the cost before building a tower or going to war. The point is not that a disciple must literally sell every possession, but that nothing may be held back as a condition of following Him.
