Mark 11:9 meaning and explanation

The ones who went ahead and those who followed were shouting: “Hosanna!” “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!”

Mark 11:9, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

As Jesus rides the colt toward Jerusalem, the crowds walking ahead of Him and behind Him shout words drawn from Psalm 118, a psalm sung at Passover. "Hosanna" comes from a Hebrew phrase meaning "save now," originally a plea for help that had become a shout of praise and hope.
