Jesus has withdrawn to the region of Tyre and Sidon, Gentile territory, and a Canaanite woman begs him to heal her daughter. His reply uses a word picture his hearers knew: the children are Israel, the bread is the blessing of the kingdom, and the dogs are household pets under the table, not street scavengers.
