Day 153: Job 6 - 9

Bible in a year reading for day 153.

Job 6

  1. 3 For then it would outweigh the sand of the seas— no wonder my words have been rash.
  2. 4 For the arrows of the Almighty have pierced me; my spirit drinks in their poison; the terrors of God are arrayed against me.
  3. 5 Does a wild donkey bray over fresh grass, or an ox low over its fodder?
  4. 6 Is tasteless food eaten without salt, or is there flavor in the white of an egg?
  5. 7 My soul refuses to touch them; they are loathsome food to me.
  6. 8 If only my request were granted and God would fulfill my hope:
  7. 9 that God would be willing to crush me, to unleash His hand and cut me off!
  8. 10 It still brings me comfort, and joy through unrelenting pain, that I have not denied the words of the Holy One.
  9. 11 What strength do I have, that I should still hope? What is my future, that I should be patient?
  10. 12 Is my strength like that of stone, or my flesh made of bronze?
  11. 13 Is there any help within me now that success is driven from me?
  12. 14 A despairing man should have the kindness of his friend, even if he forsakes the fear of the Almighty.
  13. 15 But my brothers are as faithless as wadis, as seasonal streams that overflow,
  14. 16 darkened because of the ice and the inflow of melting snow,
  15. 17 but ceasing in the dry season and vanishing from their channels in the heat.
  16. 18 Caravans turn aside from their routes; they go into the wasteland and perish.
  17. 19 The caravans of Tema look for water; the travelers of Sheba hope to find it.
  18. 20 They are confounded because they had hoped; their arrival brings disappointment.
  19. 21 For now you are of no help; you see terror, and you are afraid.
  20. 22 Have I ever said, ‘Give me something; offer me a bribe from your wealth;
  21. 23 deliver me from the hand of the enemy; redeem me from the grasp of the ruthless’?
  22. 24 Teach me, and I will be silent. Help me understand how I have erred.
  23. 25 How painful are honest words! But what does your argument prove?
  24. 26 Do you intend to correct my words, and treat as wind my cry of despair?
  25. 27 You would even cast lots for an orphan and barter away your friend.
  26. 28 But now, please look at me. Would I lie to your face?
  27. 29 Reconsider; do not be unjust. Reconsider, for my righteousness is at stake.
  28. 30 Is there iniquity on my tongue? Can my mouth not discern malice?

Job 7

  1. 1 “Is not man consigned to labor on earth? Are not his days like those of a hired hand?
  2. 2 Like a slave he longs for shade; like a hireling he waits for his wages.
  3. 3 So I am allotted months of futility, and nights of misery are appointed me.
  4. 4 When I lie down I think: ‘When will I get up?’ But the night drags on, and I toss and turn until dawn.
  5. 5 My flesh is clothed with worms and encrusted with dirt; my skin is cracked and festering.
  6. 6 My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle; they come to an end without hope.
  7. 7 Remember that my life is but a breath. My eyes will never again see happiness.
  8. 8 The eye that beholds me will no longer see me. You will look for me, but I will be no more.
  9. 9 As a cloud vanishes and is gone, so he who goes down to Sheol does not come back up.
  10. 10 He never returns to his house; his place remembers him no more.
  11. 11 Therefore I will not restrain my mouth; I will speak in the anguish of my spirit; I will complain in the bitterness of my soul.
  12. 12 Am I the sea, or the monster of the deep, that You must keep me under guard?
  13. 13 When I think my bed will comfort me and my couch will ease my complaint,
  14. 14 then You frighten me with dreams and terrify me with visions,
  15. 15 so that I would prefer strangling and death over my life in this body.
  16. 16 I loathe my life! I would not live forever. Leave me alone, for my days are but a breath.
  17. 17 What is man that You should exalt him, that You should set Your heart upon him,
  18. 18 that You attend to him every morning, and test him every moment?
  19. 19 Will You never look away from me, or leave me alone to swallow my spittle?
  20. 20 If I have sinned, what have I done to You, O watcher of mankind? Why have You made me Your target, so that I am a burden to You?
  21. 21 Why do You not pardon my transgression and take away my iniquity? For soon I will lie down in the dust; You will seek me, but I will be no more.”

Job 8

  1. 1 Then Bildad the Shuhite replied:
  2. 2 “How long will you go on saying such things? The words of your mouth are a blustering wind.
  3. 3 Does God pervert justice? Does the Almighty pervert what is right?
  4. 4 When your children sinned against Him, He gave them over to their rebellion.
  5. 5 But if you would earnestly seek God and ask the Almighty for mercy,
  6. 6 if you are pure and upright, even now He will rouse Himself on your behalf and restore your righteous estate.
  7. 7 Though your beginnings were modest, your latter days will flourish.
  8. 8 Please inquire of past generations and consider the discoveries of their fathers.
  9. 9 For we were born yesterday and know nothing; our days on earth are but a shadow.
  10. 10 Will they not teach you and tell you, and speak from their understanding?
  11. 11 Does papyrus grow where there is no marsh? Do reeds flourish without water?
  12. 12 While the shoots are still uncut, they dry up quicker than grass.
  13. 13 Such is the destiny of all who forget God; so the hope of the godless will perish.
  14. 14 His confidence is fragile; his security is in a spider’s web.
  15. 15 He leans on his web, but it gives way; he holds fast, but it does not endure.
  16. 16 He is a well-watered plant in the sunshine, spreading its shoots over the garden.
  17. 17 His roots wrap around the rock heap; he looks for a home among the stones.
  18. 18 If he is uprooted from his place, it will disown him, saying, ‘I never saw you.’
  19. 19 Surely this is the joy of his way; yet others will spring from the dust.
  20. 20 Behold, God does not reject the blameless, nor will He strengthen the hand of evildoers.
  21. 21 He will yet fill your mouth with laughter, and your lips with a shout of joy.
  22. 22 Your enemies will be clothed in shame, and the tent of the wicked will be no more.”

Job 9

  1. 1 Then Job answered:
  2. 2 “Yes, I know that it is so, but how can a mortal be righteous before God?
  3. 3 If one wished to contend with God, he could not answer Him one time out of a thousand.
  4. 4 God is wise in heart and mighty in strength. Who has resisted Him and prospered?
  5. 5 He moves mountains without their knowledge and overturns them in His anger.
  6. 6 He shakes the earth from its place, so that its foundations tremble.
  7. 7 He commands the sun not to shine; He seals off the stars.
  8. 8 He alone stretches out the heavens and treads on the waves of the sea.
  9. 9 He is the Maker of the Bear and Orion, of the Pleiades and the constellations of the south.
  10. 10 He does great things beyond searching out, and wonders without number.
  11. 11 Were He to pass by me, I would not see Him; were He to move, I would not recognize Him.
  12. 12 If He takes away, who can stop Him? Who dares to ask Him, ‘What are You doing?’
  13. 13 God does not restrain His anger; the helpers of Rahab cower beneath Him.
  14. 14 How then can I answer Him or choose my arguments against Him?
