Day 349: 2 Thessalonians 1 - 1 Timothy 3
Bible in a year reading for day 349.
2 Thessalonians 1
- 8 in blazing fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.
- 9 They will suffer the penalty of eternal destruction, separated from the presence of the Lord and the glory of His might,
- 10 on the day He comes to be glorified in His saints and regarded with wonder by all who have believed, including you who have believed our testimony.
- 11 To this end, we always pray for you, that our God will count you worthy of His calling, and that He will powerfully fulfill your every good desire and work of faith,
- 12 so that the name of our Lord Jesus will be glorified in you, and you in Him, according to the grace of our God and of the Lord Jesus Christ.
2 Thessalonians 2
- 1 Now concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered together to Him, we ask you, brothers,
- 2 not to be easily disconcerted or alarmed by any spirit or message or letter seeming to be from us, alleging that the Day of the Lord has already come.
- 3 Let no one deceive you in any way, for it will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness—the son of destruction—is revealed.
- 4 He will oppose and exalt himself above every so-called god or object of worship. So he will seat himself in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God.
- 5 Do you not remember that I told you these things while I was still with you?
- 6 And you know what is now restraining him, so that he may be revealed at the proper time.
- 7 For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work, but the one who now restrains it will continue until he is taken out of the way.
- 8 And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will slay with the breath of His mouth and annihilate by the majesty of His arrival.
- 9 The coming of the lawless one will be accompanied by the working of Satan, with every kind of power, sign, and false wonder,
- 10 and with every wicked deception directed against those who are perishing, because they refused the love of the truth that would have saved them.
- 11 For this reason God will send them a powerful delusion so that they believe the lie,
- 12 in order that judgment may come upon all who have disbelieved the truth and delighted in wickedness.
- 13 But we should always thank God for you, brothers who are loved by the Lord, because God has chosen you from the beginning to be saved by the sanctification of the Spirit and by faith in the truth.
- 14 To this He called you through our gospel, so that you may share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
- 15 Therefore, brothers, stand firm and cling to the traditions we taught you, whether by speech or by letter.
- 16 Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God our Father, who by grace has loved us and given us eternal comfort and good hope,
- 17 encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good word and deed.
2 Thessalonians 3
- 1 Finally, brothers, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may spread quickly and be held in honor, just as it was with you.
- 2 And pray that we may be delivered from wicked and evil men; for not everyone holds to the faith.
- 3 But the Lord is faithful, and He will strengthen you and guard you from the evil one.
- 4 And we have confidence in the Lord that you are doing and will continue to do what we command.
- 5 May the Lord direct your hearts into God’s love and Christ’s perseverance.
- 6 Now we command you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to keep away from any brother who leads an undisciplined life that is not in keeping with the tradition you received from us.
- 7 For you yourselves know how you ought to imitate us, because we were not undisciplined among you,
- 8 nor did we eat anyone’s food without paying for it. Instead, in labor and toil, we worked night and day so that we would not be a burden to any of you.
- 9 Not that we lack this right, but we wanted to offer ourselves as an example for you to imitate.
- 10 For even while we were with you, we gave you this command: “If anyone is unwilling to work, he shall not eat.”
- 11 Yet we hear that some of you are leading undisciplined lives and accomplishing nothing but being busybodies.
- 12 We command and urge such people by our Lord Jesus Christ to begin working quietly to earn their own living.
- 13 But as for you, brothers, do not grow weary in well-doing.
- 14 Take note of anyone who does not obey the instructions we have given in this letter. Do not associate with him, so that he may be ashamed.
- 15 Yet do not regard him as an enemy, but warn him as a brother.
- 16 Now may the Lord of peace Himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with all of you.
- 17 This greeting is in my own hand—Paul. This is my mark in every letter; it is the way I write.
- 18 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with all of you.
1 Timothy 1
- 1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the command of God our Savior and of Christ Jesus our hope,
- 2 To Timothy, my true child in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
- 3 As I urged you on my departure to Macedonia, you should stay on at Ephesus to instruct certain men not to teach false doctrines
- 4 or devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies, which promote speculation rather than the stewardship of God’s work, which is by faith.
- 5 The goal of our instruction is the love that comes from a pure heart, a clear conscience, and a sincere faith.
- 6 Some have strayed from these ways and turned aside to empty talk.
- 7 They want to be teachers of the law, but they do not understand what they are saying or that which they so confidently assert.
- 8 Now we know that the law is good, if one uses it legitimately.
- 9 We realize that law is not enacted for the righteous, but for the lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinful, for the unholy and profane, for killers of father or mother, for murderers,
- 10 for the sexually immoral, for homosexuals, for slave traders and liars and perjurers, and for anyone else who is averse to sound teaching
- 11 that agrees with the glorious gospel of the blessed God, with which I have been entrusted.
- 12 I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has strengthened me, that He considered me faithful and appointed me to service.
- 13 I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and a violent man; yet because I had acted in ignorance and unbelief, I was shown mercy.
- 14 And the grace of our Lord overflowed to me, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.
- 15 This is a trustworthy saying, worthy of full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the worst.
- 16 But for this very reason I was shown mercy, so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display His perfect patience as an example to those who would believe in Him for eternal life.
- 17 Now to the King eternal, immortal, and invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.
- 18 Timothy, my child, I entrust you with this command in keeping with the previous prophecies about you, so that by them you may fight the good fight,
- 19 holding on to faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and thereby shipwrecked their faith.
- 20 Among them are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan to be taught not to blaspheme.
1 Timothy 2
- 1 First of all, then, I urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgiving be offered for everyone—
- 2 for kings and all those in authority—so that we may lead tranquil and quiet lives in all godliness and dignity.
- 3 This is good and pleasing in the sight of God our Savior,
- 4 who wants everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
- 5 For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,
- 6 who gave Himself as a ransom for all—the testimony that was given at just the right time.
- 7 For this reason I was appointed as a preacher, an apostle, and a faithful and true teacher of the Gentiles. I am telling the truth; I am not lying about anything.
- 8 Therefore I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands, without anger or dissension.
- 9 Likewise, I want the women to adorn themselves with respectable apparel, with modesty, and with self-control, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or expensive clothes,
- 10 but with good deeds, as is proper for women who profess to worship God.
- 11 A woman must learn in quietness and full submissiveness.
- 12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; she is to remain quiet.
- 13 For Adam was formed first, and then Eve.
- 14 And it was not Adam who was deceived, but the woman who was deceived and fell into transgression.
- 15 Women, however, will be saved through childbearing, if they continue in faith, love, and holiness, with self-control.
1 Timothy 3
- 1 This is a trustworthy saying: If anyone aspires to be an overseer, he desires a noble task.
- 2 An overseer, then, must be above reproach, the husband of but one wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach,
- 3 not dependent on wine, not violent but gentle, peaceable, and free of the love of money.
- 4 An overseer must manage his own household well and keep his children under control, with complete dignity.
- 5 For if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how can he care for the church of God?
- 6 He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited and fall under the same condemnation as the devil.
- 7 Furthermore, he must have a good reputation with outsiders, so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the snare of the devil.
- 8 Deacons likewise must be dignified, not double-tongued or given to much wine or greedy for money.
- 9 They must hold to the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience.
- 10 Additionally, they must first be tested. Then, if they are above reproach, let them serve as deacons.
