Day 171: Psalms 38 - 44

Bible in a year reading for day 171.

Psalms 38

  1. 21 Do not forsake me, O LORD; be not far from me, O my God.
  2. 22 Come quickly to help me, O Lord my Savior.

Psalms 39

  1. 1 For the choirmaster. For Jeduthun. A Psalm of David. I said, “I will watch my ways so that I will not sin with my tongue; I will guard my mouth with a muzzle as long as the wicked are present.”
  2. 2 I was speechless and still; I remained silent, even from speaking good, and my sorrow was stirred.
  3. 3 My heart grew hot within me; as I mused, the fire burned. Then I spoke with my tongue:
  4. 4 “Show me, O LORD, my end and the measure of my days. Let me know how fleeting my life is.
  5. 5 You, indeed, have made my days as handbreadths, and my lifetime as nothing before You. Truly each man at his best exists as but a breath. Selah
  6. 6 Surely every man goes about like a phantom; surely he bustles in vain; he heaps up riches not knowing who will haul them away.
  7. 7 And now, O Lord, for what do I wait? My hope is in You.
  8. 8 Deliver me from all my transgressions; do not make me the reproach of fools.
  9. 9 I have become mute; I do not open my mouth because of what You have done.
  10. 10 Remove Your scourge from me; I am perishing by the force of Your hand.
  11. 11 You discipline and correct a man for his iniquity, consuming like a moth what he holds dear; surely each man is but a vapor. Selah
  12. 12 Hear my prayer, O LORD, and give ear to my cry for help; do not be deaf to my weeping. For I am a foreigner dwelling with You, a stranger like all my fathers.
  13. 13 Turn Your gaze away from me, that I may again be cheered before I depart and am no more.”

Psalms 40

  1. 1 For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. I waited patiently for the LORD; He inclined to me and heard my cry.
  2. 2 He lifted me up from the pit of despair, out of the miry clay; He set my feet upon a rock, and made my footsteps firm.
  3. 3 He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the LORD.
  4. 4 Blessed is the man who has made the LORD his trust, who has not turned to the proud, nor to those who lapse into falsehood.
  5. 5 Many, O LORD my God, are the wonders You have done, and the plans You have for us— none can compare to You— if I proclaim and declare them, they are more than I can count.
  6. 6 Sacrifice and offering You did not desire, but my ears You have opened. Burnt offerings and sin offerings You did not require.
  7. 7 Then I said, “Here I am, I have come— it is written about me in the scroll:
  8. 8 I delight to do Your will, O my God; Your law is within my heart.”
  9. 9 I proclaim righteousness in the great assembly; behold, I do not seal my lips, as You, O LORD, do know.
  10. 10 I have not covered up Your righteousness in my heart; I have declared Your faithfulness and salvation; I have not concealed Your loving devotion and faithfulness from the great assembly.
  11. 11 O LORD, do not withhold Your mercy from me; Your loving devotion and faithfulness will always guard me.
  12. 12 For evils without number surround me; my sins have overtaken me, so that I cannot see. They are more than the hairs of my head, and my heart has failed within me.
  13. 13 Be pleased, O LORD, to deliver me; hurry, O LORD, to help me.
  14. 14 May those who seek my life be ashamed and confounded; may those who wish me harm be repelled and humiliated.
  15. 15 May those who say to me, “Aha, aha!” be appalled at their own shame.
  16. 16 May all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You; may those who love Your salvation always say, “The LORD be magnified!”
  17. 17 But I am poor and needy; may the Lord think of me. You are my helper and deliverer; O my God, do not delay.

Psalms 41

  1. 1 For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. Blessed is the one who cares for the poor; the LORD will deliver him in the day of trouble.
  2. 2 The LORD will protect and preserve him; He will bless him in the land and refuse to surrender him to the will of his foes.
  3. 3 The LORD will sustain him on his bed of illness and restore him from his bed of sickness.
  4. 4 I said, “O LORD, be gracious to me; heal me, for I have sinned against You.”
  5. 5 My enemies say with malice: “When will he die and be forgotten?”
  6. 6 My visitor speaks falsehood; he gathers slander in his heart; he goes out and spreads it abroad.
  7. 7 All who hate me whisper against me; they imagine the worst for me:
  8. 8 “A vile disease has been poured into him; he will never get up from where he lies!”
  9. 9 Even my close friend whom I trusted, the one who shared my bread, has lifted up his heel against me.
  10. 10 But You, O LORD, be gracious to me and raise me up, that I may repay them.
  11. 11 By this I know that You delight in me, for my enemy does not triumph over me.
  12. 12 In my integrity You uphold me and set me in Your presence forever.
  13. 13 Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting. Amen and Amen.

Psalms 42

  1. 1 For the choirmaster. A Maskil of the sons of Korah. As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul longs after You, O God.
  2. 2 My soul thirsts for God, the living God. When shall I come and appear in God’s presence?
  3. 3 My tears have been my food both day and night, while men ask me all day long, “Where is your God?”
  4. 4 These things come to mind as I pour out my soul: how I walked with the multitude, leading the procession to the house of God with shouts of joy and praise.
  5. 5 Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why the unease within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him for the salvation of His presence.
  6. 6 O my God, my soul despairs within me. Therefore I remember You from the land of Jordan and the peaks of Hermon— even from Mount Mizar.
  7. 7 Deep calls to deep in the roar of Your waterfalls; all Your breakers and waves have rolled over me.
  8. 8 The LORD decrees His loving devotion by day, and at night His song is with me as a prayer to the God of my life.
  9. 9 I say to God my Rock, “Why have You forgotten me? Why must I walk in sorrow because of the enemy’s oppression?”
  10. 10 Like the crushing of my bones, my enemies taunt me, while they say to me all day long, “Where is your God?”
  11. 11 Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why the unease within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him, my Savior and my God.

Psalms 43

  1. 1 Vindicate me, O God, and plead my case against an ungodly nation; deliver me from deceitful and unjust men.
  2. 2 For You are the God of my refuge. Why have You rejected me? Why must I walk in sorrow because of the enemy’s oppression?
  3. 3 Send out Your light and Your truth; let them lead me. Let them bring me to Your holy mountain, and to the place where You dwell.
  4. 4 Then I will go to the altar of God, to God, my greatest joy. I will praise You with the harp, O God, my God.
  5. 5 Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why the unease within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him, my Savior and my God.

Psalms 44

  1. 1 For the choirmaster. A Maskil of the sons of Korah. We have heard with our ears, O God; our fathers have told us the work You did in their days, in the days of old.
  2. 2 With Your hand You drove out the nations and planted our fathers there; You crushed the peoples and cast them out.
  3. 3 For it was not by their sword that they took the land; their arm did not bring them victory. It was by Your right hand, Your arm, and the light of Your face, because You favored them.
  4. 4 You are my King, O God, who ordains victories for Jacob.
  5. 5 Through You we repel our foes; through Your name we trample our enemies.
  6. 6 For I do not trust in my bow, nor does my sword save me.
  7. 7 For You save us from our enemies; You put those who hate us to shame.
  8. 8 In God we have boasted all day long, and Your name we will praise forever. Selah
  9. 9 But You have rejected and humbled us; You no longer go forth with our armies.
  10. 10 You have made us retreat from the foe, and those who hate us have plundered us.
  11. 11 You have given us up as sheep to be devoured; You have scattered us among the nations.
  12. 12 You sell Your people for nothing; no profit do You gain from their sale.
  13. 13 You have made us a reproach to our neighbors, a mockery and derision to those around us.
  14. 14 You have made us a byword among the nations, a laughingstock among the peoples.
  15. 15 All day long my disgrace is before me, and shame has covered my face,
  16. 16 at the voice of the scorner and reviler, because of the enemy, bent on revenge.
  17. 17 All this has come upon us, though we have not forgotten You or betrayed Your covenant.
  18. 18 Our hearts have not turned back; our steps have not strayed from Your path.
  19. 19 But You have crushed us in the lair of jackals; You have covered us with deepest darkness.
  20. 20 If we had forgotten the name of our God or spread out our hands to a foreign god,
  21. 21 would not God have discovered, since He knows the secrets of the heart?
  22. 22 Yet for Your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.
  23. 23 Wake up, O Lord! Why are You sleeping? Arise! Do not reject us forever.
  24. 24 Why do You hide Your face and forget our affliction and oppression?
