Day 195: Proverbs 6 - 8

Bible in a year reading for day 195.

Proverbs 6

  1. 11 and poverty will come upon you like a robber, and need like a bandit.
  2. 12 A worthless person, a wicked man, walks with a perverse mouth,
  3. 13 winking his eyes, speaking with his feet, and pointing with his fingers.
  4. 14 With deceit in his heart he devises evil; he continually sows discord.
  5. 15 Therefore calamity will come upon him suddenly; in an instant he will be shattered beyond recovery.
  6. 16 There are six things that the LORD hates, seven that are detestable to Him:
  7. 17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood,
  8. 18 a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that run swiftly to evil,
  9. 19 a false witness who gives false testimony, and one who stirs up discord among brothers.
  10. 20 My son, keep your father’s commandment, and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.
  11. 21 Bind them always upon your heart; tie them around your neck.
  12. 22 When you walk, they will guide you; when you lie down, they will watch over you; when you awake, they will speak to you.
  13. 23 For this commandment is a lamp, this teaching is a light, and the reproofs of discipline are the way to life,
  14. 24 to keep you from the evil woman, from the smooth tongue of the adulteress.
  15. 25 Do not lust in your heart for her beauty or let her captivate you with her eyes.
  16. 26 For the levy of the prostitute is poverty, and the adulteress preys upon your very life.
  17. 27 Can a man embrace fire and his clothes not be burned?
  18. 28 Can a man walk on hot coals without scorching his feet?
  19. 29 So is he who sleeps with another man’s wife; no one who touches her will go unpunished.
  20. 30 Men do not despise the thief if he steals to satisfy his hunger.
  21. 31 Yet if caught, he must pay sevenfold; he must give up all the wealth of his house.
  22. 32 He who commits adultery lacks judgment; whoever does so destroys himself.
  23. 33 Wounds and dishonor will befall him, and his reproach will never be wiped away.
  24. 34 For jealousy enrages a husband, and he will show no mercy in the day of vengeance.
  25. 35 He will not be appeased by any ransom, or persuaded by lavish gifts.

Proverbs 7

  1. 1 My son, keep my words and treasure my commandments within you.
  2. 2 Keep my commandments and live; guard my teachings as the apple of your eye.
  3. 3 Tie them to your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart.
  4. 4 Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,” and call understanding your kinsman,
  5. 5 that they may keep you from the adulteress, from the stranger with seductive words.
  6. 6 For at the window of my house I looked through the lattice.
  7. 7 I saw among the simple, I noticed among the youths, a young man lacking judgment,
  8. 8 crossing the street near her corner, strolling down the road to her house,
  9. 9 at twilight, as the day was fading into the dark of the night.
  10. 10 Then a woman came out to meet him, with the attire of a harlot and cunning of heart.
  11. 11 She is loud and defiant; her feet do not remain at home.
  12. 12 Now in the street, now in the squares, she lurks at every corner.
  13. 13 She seizes him and kisses him; she brazenly says to him:
  14. 14 “I have made my peace offerings; today I have paid my vows.
  15. 15 So I came out to meet you; I sought you, and I have found you.
  16. 16 I have decked my bed with coverings, with colored linen from Egypt.
  17. 17 I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, with aloes, and with cinnamon.
  18. 18 Come, let us take our fill of love till morning. Let us delight in loving caresses!
  19. 19 For my husband is not at home; he has gone on a long journey.
  20. 20 He took with him a bag of money and will not return till the moon is full.”
  21. 21 With her great persuasion she entices him; with her flattering lips she lures him.
  22. 22 He follows her on impulse, like an ox going to the slaughter, like a deer bounding into a trap,
  23. 23 until an arrow pierces his liver, like a bird darting into a snare— not knowing it will cost him his life.
  24. 24 Now, my sons, listen to me, and attend to the words of my mouth.
  25. 25 Do not let your heart turn aside to her ways; do not stray into her paths.
  26. 26 For she has brought many down to death; her slain are many in number.
  27. 27 Her house is the road to Sheol, descending to the chambers of death.

Proverbs 8

  1. 1 Does not wisdom call out, and understanding raise her voice?
  2. 2 On the heights overlooking the road, at the crossroads she takes her stand.
  3. 3 Beside the gates to the city, at the entrances she cries out:
  4. 4 “To you, O men, I call out, and my cry is to the sons of men.
  5. 5 O simple ones, learn to be shrewd; O fools, gain understanding.
  6. 6 Listen, for I speak of noble things, and the opening of my lips will reveal right.
  7. 7 For my mouth will speak the truth, and wickedness is detestable to my lips.
  8. 8 All the words of my mouth are righteous; none are crooked or perverse.
  9. 9 They are all plain to the discerning, and upright to those who find knowledge.
  10. 10 Receive my instruction instead of silver, and knowledge rather than pure gold.
  11. 11 For wisdom is more precious than rubies, and nothing you desire compares with her.
  12. 12 I, wisdom, dwell together with prudence, and I find knowledge and discretion.
  13. 13 To fear the LORD is to hate evil; I hate arrogant pride, evil conduct, and perverse speech.
  14. 14 Counsel and sound judgment are mine; I have insight and strength.
  15. 15 By me kings reign, and rulers enact just laws;
  16. 16 By me princes rule, and all nobles who govern justly.
  17. 17 I love those who love me, and those who seek me early shall find me.
  18. 18 With me are riches and honor, enduring wealth and righteousness.
  19. 19 My fruit is better than gold, pure gold, and my harvest surpasses choice silver.
  20. 20 I walk in the way of righteousness, along the paths of justice,
  21. 21 bestowing wealth on those who love me and making their treasuries full.
  22. 22 The LORD created me as His first course, before His works of old.
  23. 23 From everlasting I was established, from the beginning, before the earth began.
  24. 24 When there were no watery depths, I was brought forth, when no springs were overflowing with water.
  25. 25 Before the mountains were settled, before the hills, I was brought forth,
  26. 26 before He made the land or fields, or any of the dust of the earth.
  27. 27 I was there when He established the heavens, when He inscribed a circle on the face of the deep,
  28. 28 when He established the clouds above, when the fountains of the deep gushed forth,
  29. 29 when He set a boundary for the sea, so that the waters would not surpass His command, when He marked out the foundations of the earth.
  30. 30 Then I was a skilled craftsman at His side, and His delight day by day, rejoicing always in His presence.
  31. 31 I was rejoicing in His whole world, delighting together in the sons of men.
  32. 32 Now therefore, my sons, listen to me, for blessed are those who keep my ways.
  33. 33 Listen to instruction and be wise; do not ignore it.
