Day 263: Joel 2 - Amos 4

Bible in a year reading for day 263.

Joel 2

  1. 20 The northern army I will drive away from you, banishing it to a barren and desolate land, its front ranks into the Eastern Sea, and its rear guard into the Western Sea. And its stench will rise; its foul odor will ascend. For He has done great things.
  2. 21 Do not be afraid, O land; rejoice and be glad, for the LORD has done great things.
  3. 22 Do not be afraid, O beasts of the field, for the open pastures have turned green, the trees bear their fruit, and the fig tree and vine yield their best.
  4. 23 Be glad, O children of Zion, and rejoice in the LORD your God, for He has given you the autumn rains for your vindication. He sends you showers, both autumn and spring rains, as before.
  5. 24 The threshing floors will be full of grain, and the vats will overflow with new wine and oil.
  6. 25 I will repay you for the years eaten by locusts— the swarming locust, the young locust, the destroying locust, and the devouring locust— My great army that I sent against you.
  7. 26 You will have plenty to eat, until you are satisfied. You will praise the name of the LORD your God, who has worked wonders for you. My people will never again be put to shame.
  8. 27 Then you will know that I am present in Israel and that I am the LORD your God, and there is no other. My people will never again be put to shame.
  9. 28 And afterward, I will pour out My Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions.
  10. 29 Even on My menservants and maidservants, I will pour out My Spirit in those days.
  11. 30 I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and columns of smoke.
  12. 31 The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and awesome Day of the LORD.
  13. 32 And everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved; for on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be deliverance, as the LORD has promised, among the remnant called by the LORD.

Joel 3

  1. 1 “Yes, in those days and at that time, when I restore Judah and Jerusalem from captivity,
  2. 2 I will gather all the nations and bring them down to the Valley of Jehoshaphat. There I will enter into judgment against them concerning My people, My inheritance, Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations as they divided up My land.
  3. 3 They cast lots for My people; they bartered a boy for a prostitute and sold a girl for wine to drink.
  4. 4 Now what do you have against Me, O Tyre, Sidon, and all the regions of Philistia? Are you rendering against Me a recompense? If you retaliate against Me, I will swiftly and speedily return your recompense upon your heads.
  5. 5 For you took My silver and gold and carried off My finest treasures to your temples.
  6. 6 You sold the people of Judah and Jerusalem to the Greeks, to send them far from their homeland.
  7. 7 Behold, I will rouse them from the places to which you sold them; I will return your recompense upon your heads.
  8. 8 I will sell your sons and daughters into the hands of the people of Judah, and they will sell them to the Sabeans—to a distant nation.” Indeed, the LORD has spoken.
  9. 9 Proclaim this among the nations: “Prepare for war; rouse the mighty men; let all the men of war advance and attack!
  10. 10 Beat your plowshares into swords and your pruning hooks into spears. Let the weak say, ‘I am strong!’
  11. 11 Come quickly, all you surrounding nations, and gather yourselves. Bring down Your mighty ones, O LORD.
  12. 12 Let the nations be roused and advance to the Valley of Jehoshaphat, for there I will sit down to judge all the nations on every side.
  13. 13 Swing the sickle, for the harvest is ripe. Come, trample the grapes, for the winepress is full; the wine vats overflow because their wickedness is great.
  14. 14 Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision! For the Day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision.
  15. 15 The sun and moon will grow dark, and the stars will no longer shine.
  16. 16 The LORD will roar from Zion and raise His voice from Jerusalem; heaven and earth will tremble. But the LORD will be a refuge for His people, a stronghold for the people of Israel.
  17. 17 Then you will know that I am the LORD your God, who dwells in Zion, My holy mountain. Jerusalem will be holy, never again to be overrun by foreigners.
  18. 18 And in that day the mountains will drip with sweet wine, and the hills will flow with milk. All the streams of Judah will run with water, and a spring will flow from the house of the LORD to water the Valley of Acacias.
  19. 19 Egypt will become desolate, and Edom a desert wasteland, because of the violence done to the people of Judah, in whose land they shed innocent blood.
  20. 20 But Judah will be inhabited forever, and Jerusalem from generation to generation.
  21. 21 For I will avenge their blood, which I have not yet avenged.” For the LORD dwells in Zion.

Amos 1

  1. 1 These are the words of Amos, who was among the sheepherders of Tekoa—what he saw concerning Israel two years before the earthquake, in the days when Uzziah was king of Judah and Jeroboam son of Jehoash was king of Israel.
  2. 2 He said: “The LORD roars from Zion and raises His voice from Jerusalem; the pastures of the shepherds mourn, and the summit of Carmel withers.”
  3. 3 This is what the LORD says: “For three transgressions of Damascus, even four, I will not revoke My judgment, because they threshed Gilead with sledges of iron.
  4. 4 So I will send fire upon the house of Hazael to consume the citadels of Ben-hadad.
  5. 5 I will break down the gates of Damascus; I will cut off the ruler of the Valley of Aven and the one who wields the scepter in Beth-eden. The people of Aram will be exiled to Kir,” says the LORD.
  6. 6 This is what the LORD says: “For three transgressions of Gaza, even four, I will not revoke My judgment, because they exiled a whole population, delivering them up to Edom.
  7. 7 So I will send fire upon the walls of Gaza, to consume its citadels.
  8. 8 I will cut off the ruler of Ashdod and the one who wields the scepter in Ashkelon. I will turn My hand against Ekron, and the remnant of the Philistines will perish,” says the Lord GOD.
  9. 9 This is what the LORD says: “For three transgressions of Tyre, even four, I will not revoke My judgment, because they delivered up a whole congregation of exiles to Edom and broke a covenant of brotherhood.
  10. 10 So I will send fire upon the walls of Tyre to consume its citadels.”
  11. 11 This is what the LORD says: “For three transgressions of Edom, even four, I will not revoke My judgment, because he pursued his brother with the sword and stifled all compassion; his anger raged continually, and his fury flamed incessantly.
  12. 12 So I will send fire upon Teman to consume the citadels of Bozrah.”
  13. 13 This is what the LORD says: “For three transgressions of the Ammonites, even four, I will not revoke My judgment, because they ripped open the pregnant women of Gilead in order to enlarge their territory.
  14. 14 So I will kindle a fire in the walls of Rabbah to consume its citadels amid war cries on the day of battle and a violent wind on the day of tempest.
  15. 15 Their king will go into exile— he and his princes together,” says the LORD.

Amos 2

  1. 1 This is what the LORD says: “For three transgressions of Moab, even four, I will not revoke My judgment, because he burned to lime the bones of Edom’s king.
  2. 2 So I will send fire against Moab to consume the citadels of Kerioth. Moab will die in tumult, amid war cries and the sound of the ram’s horn.
  3. 3 I will cut off the ruler of Moab and kill all the officials with him,” says the LORD.
  4. 4 This is what the LORD says: “For three transgressions of Judah, even four, I will not revoke My judgment, because they reject the Law of the LORD and fail to keep His statutes; they are led astray by the lies in which their fathers walked.
  5. 5 So I will send fire upon Judah to consume the citadels of Jerusalem.”
  6. 6 This is what the LORD says: “For three transgressions of Israel, even four, I will not revoke My judgment, because they sell the righteous for silver and the needy for a pair of sandals.
  7. 7 They trample on the heads of the poor as on the dust of the earth; they push the needy out of their way. A man and his father have relations with the same girl and so profane My holy name.
  8. 8 They lie down beside every altar on garments taken in pledge. And in the house of their God, they drink wine obtained through fines.
  9. 9 Yet it was I who destroyed the Amorite before them, though his height was like that of the cedars, and he was as strong as the oaks. Yet I destroyed his fruit above and his roots below.
  10. 10 And I brought you up from the land of Egypt and led you forty years in the wilderness, that you might take possession of the land of the Amorite.
  11. 11 I raised up prophets from your sons and Nazirites from your young men. Is this not true, O children of Israel?” declares the LORD.
  12. 12 “But you made the Nazirites drink wine and commanded the prophets not to prophesy.
  13. 13 Behold, I am about to crush you in your place as with a cart full of grain.
  14. 14 Escape will fail the swift, the strong will not prevail by his strength, and the mighty will not save his life.
  15. 15 The archer will not stand his ground, the fleet of foot will not escape, and the horseman will not save his life.
  16. 16 Even the bravest of mighty men will flee naked on that day,” declares the LORD.

Amos 3

  1. 1 Hear this word that the LORD has spoken against you, O children of Israel, against the whole family that I brought up out of the land of Egypt:
  2. 2 “Only you have I known from all the families of the earth; therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities.”
  3. 3 Can two walk together without agreeing where to go?
  4. 4 Does a lion roar in the forest when he has no prey? Does a young lion growl in his den if he has caught nothing?
  5. 5 Does a bird land in a snare where no bait has been set? Does a trap spring from the ground when it has nothing to catch?
  6. 6 If a ram’s horn sounds in a city, do the people not tremble? If calamity comes to a city, has not the LORD caused it?
  7. 7 Surely the Lord GOD does nothing without revealing His plan to His servants the prophets.
  8. 8 The lion has roared— who will not fear? The Lord GOD has spoken— who will not prophesy?
  9. 9 Proclaim to the citadels of Ashdod and to the citadels of Egypt: “Assemble on the mountains of Samaria; see the great unrest in the city and the acts of oppression in her midst.”
  10. 10 “For they know not how to do right,” declares the LORD. “They store up violence and destruction in their citadels.”
  11. 11 Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: “An enemy will surround the land; he will pull down your strongholds and plunder your citadels.”
  12. 12 This is what the LORD says: “As the shepherd snatches from the mouth of the lion two legs or a piece of an ear, so the Israelites dwelling in Samaria will be rescued having just the corner of a bed or the cushion of a couch.
  13. 13 Hear and testify against the house of Jacob, declares the Lord GOD, the God of Hosts.
  14. 14 On the day I punish Israel for their transgressions, I will visit destruction on the altars of Bethel; the horns of the altar will be cut off, and they will fall to the ground.
  15. 15 I will tear down the winter house along with the summer house; the houses of ivory will also perish, and the great houses will come to an end,” declares the LORD.

Amos 4

  1. 1 Hear this word, you cows of Bashan on Mount Samaria, you women who oppress the poor and crush the needy, who say to your husbands, “Bring us more to drink.”
  2. 2 The Lord GOD has sworn by His holiness: “Behold, the days are coming when you will be taken away with hooks, and your posterity with fishhooks.
  3. 3 You will go out through broken walls, each one straight ahead of her, and you will be cast out toward Harmon,” declares the LORD.
  4. 4 “Go to Bethel and transgress; rebel even more at Gilgal! Bring your sacrifices every morning, your tithes every three days.
  5. 5 Offer leavened bread as a thank offering, and loudly proclaim your freewill offerings. For that is what you children of Israel love to do,” declares the Lord GOD.
